launch-graphic-largeSocial media sharing doesn’t just happen at a desk. It happens in the car, on the train, during a holiday – anywhere and everywhere. At Buffer, our goal is to provide you with the easiest possible way to share to your social accounts – even on-the-go.

That’s why today we’re ecstatic to show you a project that’s been five months in the making here at Buffer: the completely redesigned Buffer app for iOS 7.

Complete details on all the app’s upgrades are below – or if you just can’t wait, download it right away for free from the App Store.

What’s new in version 3.0 of the Buffer iPhone app

  • New “Re-Buffer” button allows you to re-post key content
  • Support for Facebook Groups (in addition to Profiles & Pages)
  • New “share next” button
  • Team management: Invite and edit team members from anywhere
  • Deeper analytics: Know how your content performs, anywhere
  • Content suggestions: Keep your social media stream full
  • Advanced customization for your Buffer editor
  • Background updating to keep your queue total up to date
  • Revamped to boost performance
  • New design for iOS 7

All these updates and more were made with one thing in mind: simple social sharing. Here is more detail into what went into each of these upgrades.

Redesigned to shine

The look of the app has undergone a significant makeover. The design is simpler, with a flat interface that matches the design style of iOS 7.

A lot of design work went into the look and feel of the composer, giving you total control of your options while Buffering your latest post. The full-screen windows allow you to see options for posting to different accounts, attaching photos, and customizing the publish time, all while you’re writing your message.

In addition, you’ll find special design touches for Buffered retweets, team member contributions, and more.

Add content suggestions to your queue

You never need to go without interesting content to share. Buffer’s content suggestions offer five unique choices of must-read stories, informative graphics, and inspiring quotes for you to pick and choose from each day. If you want to add any of these to your queue, you can now do so straight from the app.

(And for those of you who don’t need suggestions, any settings you’ve changed for this feature on the web will carry over to the app.)

Always see your most accurate queue count

Knowing how much remains in your queue can be hugely beneficial as you’re adding content. With this in mind, the Buffer iPhone app now fetches data in the background – even when you’re not using Buffer on your phone – to ensure that your accounts stay up to date. Now, each time you open the app, you can see right away how many posts you have in your queue.

Add and edit team members

Manage your social media team from wherever you are. The app now supports full team management, including inviting new managers or contributors and editing roles.

If you’re curious how the team feature works, you can sign up for the Awesome plan or take our Business plan for a spin.

Complete control over your accounts

Sharing simply and easily to the right place is important to you, and it’s important to us. We built the new composer so that you could set which accounts are selected by default—the current account you are viewing or the presets you created from within your dashboard.

Native retweets and third-party apps

Your Buffer is closer than ever with our integration with third-party apps. We have added the ability for third-party apps to open Buffer, displaying your composer and allowing you to post native retweets for the first time on iPhone.

All the data from the web app, in the palm of your hand

Everything you might need from your Buffer dashboard is here on the app, laid out in an intuitive way to make it as easy as possible to share, track, and engage. You can view the current Buffers for all your connected accounts, analyze the interactions with each of your posts, and make all the changes and edits you need. These areas are always available to you via the bar at the bottom of the screen.

What’s next for the Buffer app?

Even as we’re thrilled to release this new version of the app, we’re already hard at work on the next. We’ve started looking ahead to how we can continue to make Buffer for mobile a wonderful experience for our awesome users. How does universal support for iPhone and iPad sound? We’re aiming for this next improvement to be complete in the next couple of months.

If you want to work with us on making our app universal, we’re on the lookout for iOS developers to join our small team. We’d love to hear from you!

Do you have an app for Android as well?

  • Christin Jones Kardos

When you guys do something, you always nail it. The update will save me a lot of time. Thanks!!

    • Thanks, Christin! This is so great to hear. Really happy to be saving you time. 🙂

  • Kaio Furlani

“How does universal support for iPhone and iPad sound?” Great!

    • Excellent! We’ll keep pushing forward on this. 🙂

  • jeffkart

love it! how does the app integrate with twitter? I’d love to be able to surf my followers and buffer retweets while using twitter, on the phone, like I can on the web. is that coming?

    • Andrew Yates

We’ll be keeping an eye on what new sharing functionality Apple provides us at WWDC in June, right now we aren’t able to hook into third party apps like we can on Android. We’ll keep hunting down better solutions for you in the meantime though Jeff!

As for the options right now, you can use your Buffer’s secret email to add from other Twitter clients straight to your Buffer. 🙂

      • jeffkart

Thanks. Do you have a link on that?

        • Andrew Yates

Sure! If your logged into the webapp you can find details about it here…. Or if you visit the App Settings within the iPhone app. 🙂

          • jeffkart

            Thanks. Buffer rules!

  • Are any of these new features going to be coming to the Android app?

    • sunils34

Hi Emily! Yup these new features are definitely going to be in the Android app. We’re working hard to ensure they move to the Android app.

Unfortunately though, it’s hard for me to give a more accurate timeline of when some of these features will make it to the Android app.

  • Mike Coutts (@couttsdotcom)

I am pumped to see something like this for Android!

  • Faux Wood

Sounds great but one question and one suggestion.

First, will the new features also be added to the desktop version of Buffer? I use that 50 percent of the time.

Also, when making revisions to the app in the future, please consider those of us who, for a wide variety of reasons, don’t jump on the latest iOS. Some times we have very good reasons for staying a generation behind. Focusing updates so that they work on both the current iOS and the last generation means you’ll have greater penetration than those that just focus on the new iOS.

    Keep up the good work!

    • Thanks so much for this suggestion. Makes sense to keep this in mind for our updates. 🙂

RE: the new features, you’ll find all these on the web version of Buffer!

  • Looks great, y’all!

  • Totally stoked about this! I hope other apps get integration soon because it’s tough to use Buffer on mobile. Great work guys!

  • Eric James Hanusa

Are there any apps that integrate the native retweets function for iOS yet?

    • Hi Eric! Thanks for checking. We’re not aware of any apps that integrate yet, but we’re hoping some will soon. We’ll likely announce anything like this on our Twitter, if that would be helpful to you.

  • I was just thinking yesterday that the app was due for a significant update. Has consideration ever been given to having pre-set selections? I manage social media for 4 companies and have to constantly de-select and select the appropriate profiles. One button to select all from a company would be very helpful.

    • I need exactly the same feature!!

    • We’ve got this feature in the works! 🙂 It’s great to hear your support of this, thanks for the comment and feedback.

  • Excellent. Looking forward to using it 🙂

  • Jennifer

    Love it!

  • So far, this update is great! Any movement on Google+ Profile support? (yes, I’m on the mailing list.)

    • Thanks for checking, Ryan! No movement on this yet, but it’s definitely something on our list. 🙂

  • Alex

Is it possible to include my own link shortener?

    • Awesome suggestion, Alex! Currently, we support,, and but we’re always keen to know what other features you’re interested in. Thanks for sharing!

      • Alex

Nice! I’m currently using And I’m copy pasting it into buffer. I’d love to see an implementation of these kind of services.

  • Vandziux

Why this cool app is only for iPhones? Android users wants it too! 🙂

    • We hear you! We’re planning on updating Android with these iPhone goodies, too. 🙂

  • Akash Agarwal

Nice article. This are really great tips on social media management. Thanks a lot for sharing this.

  • Will try this. Had the old one but never used it as it was just too hard to follow all the steps needed before you could share a website or story that you’d just found. Has new version found a ‘simple’ way to integrate with IOS safari so that this kind of sharing will be easier?

  • have just spent 40 mins with new version. Just as bad as old one Followed all of the ‘steps’ to add buffer applet and still no idea of what this is supposed to do or if it works. is the idea that when I see a page to share I click on the ‘share link and I see a Buffer option up there with ‘message, mail, tweet, and FB options? if so, not happening. Can we have a simple youtube clip or something showing us exactly how to do this? Some of us are maybe a bit dense.

    • Adam Farmer

Hey there, Philip! Sorry for the trouble here! Definitely something that could be laid out a bit better on our side. When it comes to the Bookmarklet for your mobile browser, it will allow you to be viewing a page in the browser and then Buffer from there. I can definitely walk through this with you to make sure it is working, but I think email may be a bit better here. Would you be up for sending a message to [email protected]? We can jump on this from there for you. 🙂

  • Any plans for bringing the “share next” feature to the Android app, soon?

    • Courtney Seiter

Yes! Our engineers are hard at work on some great stuff for Android coming soon!
