Has Twitter Changed How @Reply Works? [Answer: No, it’s an error]

UPDATE: Thanks to Dave @TweetSmarter and Fizz @Fizzard it seems that this is only an error happening to some instead of a real change. Either way, watch out for it. 🙂

There is a really interesting thing @Luca brought to my attention today.

Twitter seems to have changed how you can reply to people. Sometimes people used to put a “.” before an “@reply” in order for tweet to be seen by everyone. Something like this:

Now, if you put a “.” or other character before an @reply it will still only be seen by the person you are tweeting to. So most of your followers will not see it even though you put the “.” in front of it.

How to still put the “.” in

What you can still do of course is to send a normal “@mention”, which is different from an “@reply”. So whenever you just start a new Tweet with “[email protected]” and don’t hit the reply button, it will still be seen by all your followers.

Ok, I hope this is an interesting tip for you. After all, the recent incident of an American Congressman showed how easy it is to confuse what is public and what is not.

Thanks again to @Luca, who brought this to my attention. He is a cool guy, working on a startup called Work.io.
